Mull and Iona gained a central place to hold meetings, run training and rent desk and office space when the community and business centre at Craignure was built, a short walk from the ferry terminal. The building, An Roth, also gave the trust a permanent base.
The centre was completed in 2011 and officially opened on 10 February 2012.
TO CONFIRM: The old site gives two dates and no build detail. 2011 is used as the completion year, per the client brief. The start date, the build cost and the contractor are not recorded anywhere on the old site.
Why it was built
The trust was set up in 1997 and worked for years without a permanent home. A central hub had been an ambition from early on, both as a base for staff and as a resource the whole of Mull and Iona could use.
The building was given a Gaelic name to reflect the cultural heritage of the island. An Roth means ‘The Wheel’.
What it made possible
The centre brought meeting, training and office space to a central point in the island that is well served by public transport. It also gave the trust room to grow. MICT had one employee in 1997 and now has the equivalent of 14 full-time staff.
Income from room and desk rental, office services and self storage helps fund the trust’s wider work, which reduces its reliance on grants.
