There is a community-run pontoon at Ulva Ferry. It opened in August 2016 and employs local people.

How it came about
In 2011 Ulva School Community Association was formed as part of a successful campaign to save Ulva Primary School from closure. The association asked Mull and Iona Community Trust for help to prepare a community development plan and identify projects that would strengthen the local community.
Together they obtained funding from Highlands & Islands Enterprise to employ a local development officer, who carried out the community consultation. One of the priority projects that came out of it was a waterside development to bring tourism and local employment.
In 2013 the Trust secured funding from the Coastal Communities Fund for a pontoon facility at Ulva Ferry. It opened three years later.
Alongside the pontoon
In support of the same community, the Trust also introduced a community transport scheme and built six homes for affordable rent – all helping to keep Ulva Primary School open.
